Choosing what to wear in Cabo Pulmo is largely about protecting the fragile Gulf of California ecosystem. Guides will check your sunscreen before you get on a boat. Here is what you need to know about sun protection and packing for a day on the water.
Can I wear sunscreen in the marine park?
You can only wear sunscreen if it is 100% reef-safe and biodegradable.
Chemical sunscreens damage the coral reef and are strictly banned. Check your ingredients carefully. Even if a bottle says 'reef-safe,' you must ensure it does not contain harmful chemicals.
Why should I wear a UPF rash guard?
Park authorities heavily encourage visitors to wear UPF rash guards instead of relying on sunscreen.
A long-sleeve UPF rash guard provides constant sun protection without leaving any chemical residue in the water. It also protects your skin from accidental scrapes while snorkeling.

Do I need a wetsuit in Cabo Pulmo?
You will likely need a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit if you visit during the winter or spring.
Water temperatures drop significantly between December and April. Most guided tours provide wetsuits, but you should confirm this with your operator. Pack a windbreaker for the boat ride back, as winter winds can make you cold quickly.
What else should I pack for Cabo Pulmo?
Bring cash, a reusable water bottle, a dry bag, and a quick-dry towel.
- Cash: Bring Mexican Pesos for park fees (about 125 MXN), tips, and local restaurants. Card machines are rare.
- Dry bag: Protect your phone and wallet from splashing on small panga boats.
- Water bottle: Stay hydrated in the dry Baja climate.
- Snorkel gear: Bring your own mask and fins if you prefer a personal fit over rentals.

Will I get seasick on the boat?
If you are prone to seasickness, take motion sickness medication before your tour.
All snorkeling and diving access in the park requires riding in small, open panga boats. The water can sometimes get choppy, especially when afternoon winds pick up.
What other clothing or gear rules exist?
All snorkelers must wear a mandatory life jacket or safety vest while in the water.
You cannot use drones or professional photography equipment without prior permits. Remember that touching, standing on, or removing coral or shells is strictly prohibited.

Questions travellers ask
How much is the entrance fee for Cabo Pulmo National Park?
The mandatory CONANP conservation fee is about 125 MXN per person, per day. You will receive a conservation bracelet as proof of payment.
Can you snorkel in Cabo Pulmo without a tour?
All in-water activities require a locally accredited guide and an authorized boat captain. You cannot snorkel most reef areas independently.
Is sunscreen allowed in Cabo Pulmo?
Only reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen is permitted. However, the park strongly recommends wearing a UPF rash guard instead to protect the reef.
